時間を忘れ、我を忘れるparticles（パーティクルズ）
第15回文化庁メディア芸術祭に足を運んだ。
充分な時間がなかったので、さまざまな作品について語ることができないため、「particles」（真鍋大渡さん/石橋素さん）という作品についてふれたいと思う。
会場の入口を入ってすぐ右手にある部屋に入ると、中はほとんど真っ暗。でも、よく見ると、何かが動きまわっている。目が馴れるとだんだん見えてくるのが、光るボールとレールのようなもの。不規則に点滅する複数のボールが、レールをすべるように降りてくる。
最初、ボールがどういう仕組みで動いているのかよくわからなかったが、よく見ると、左奥にボールを上へ運ぶ、ボール用のエレベーターのようなものがあるようだ。
こう書いてもよくわからないかもしれないが、ピタゴラスイッチのような装置が設置されていて、その幅が5メートルくらいだろうか。ピタゴラ装置といってもいいし、ボーネルンドにある玩具といってもいい。
天高は3〜4メートル、奥行きは3〜4メートルくらいあるだろうか。あ、そう考えると、幅は5メートルよりもあったかもしれない。
音量を適度に抑えたエレクトロニクスサウンドのような音をBGMに、大きなピタゴラ装置のような空間をぐるぐる巡るボールは、点滅のパターンを不規則に繰り返し、どのタイミングでどう光るのは、僕がいた時間では（そう長くいたわけではない）よくわからなかった。
ボールは野球のボールくらいの大きさだったろうか、外は白く、中にはICチップというのは基盤というのか、そういうものが入っていたが（入口横に展示してあった）、点滅のパターンはどうやって指示されているのか。プログラミングされたパターンが、無線LANなどを通じて飛び、ボールの点滅を操作しているのか。
プログラミングなどに詳しい人にとっては、もしかしたら技術的にはむずかしいことではないのかもしれない。もしそうだとしても、作品としてのおもしろさは損なわれないと思う。
仕組みや意味がわからない人にも（作者は「何かを訴えたい」というような意味を込めて作っていないように思う）、この作品の魅力は伝わるのでないかと思うし、この作品に関して、それでいいのだろう。
もしかしたら、この「particles」が今回、アート部門の優秀賞で、大賞でなかった理由は、その「意味のなさ」かもしれない。僕はそう想像したが、この「意味のなさ」はそれでよしだと思うし、（良い意味で）意味もなければ、始まりも終わりもないこの「particles」が、強く印象に残った。
作品を鑑賞している間、学生時代に京都の森の中に夜中訪れて蛍の群れを見たことや、Flashで作ったのであろうparticle systemなど（たとえばこのような）を想起したり、いろいろなことが頭に浮かんだ。小学生の頃だったか、学研の科学雑誌『ムー』で知った、エマモーターと呼ばれる永久動力まで思い出した。
始まりも終わりもない。落ちもない。ここでいう「落ち」というのは、「笑わせる」というニュアンスでの「落ち」ではないが、「で、結局、それはどういうことなの？」などと僕たちは考えがちだけど、「結局どうなの？ みたいなことはどうでもいいじゃないの？」と作者に言われているような気がした。
特に仕事となると、「結局、こうやる意味は？」「こうやることの効果は？」などと考えがちだけど、アートというのはそういうものだなくてもいい。効率や意味を重視しなくてもいい。
そうなのか、どうなのか。アートって何？ アートじゃないものって何？ 僕にとっては、なかなか答えの出るものではないけれど、そういうふうに考えさせてくれたものとひさしぶりに出会ったような気がするし、「particles」に感謝したい。
アートって結局、何？ と、また「結局」を使いそうになるけど、答えはすぐに出なくていいし、ずっと出ないことかもしれないけど、「アートとは」「哲学とは」みたいなことをときには考えてみるのもいいではないか。ふだんは、仕事の意味や効果や即効性ばかりにこだわり、脳の上のほう（表層に近い部分）しか使っていなかった気がするけど、たまには奥のほうまで使ってみようと思ったし、そのきっかけになってくれた。
まとまらないけど、まとまらなくていい、安易にまとめるほうが良くない、誰かにそう言われているような気がしてきた。
時間を見つけて、もう一度「particle」や、その他の昨日見られなかった作品にふれてみたいと思う（文字通り、さわるという意味ではもちろん、ないです）。人が多いのはわかるけど、「particle」に関して、係の人には「立ち止まらずにご覧ください」という注意をなるべく控えてほしい。
ソファでも置いてもらい、そこに座って、時間を気にせず鑑賞するとより楽しめる作品だと思う。大きさも重要だし、空間の空気感というか、雰囲気も大切だと思うし、情報だけ知ってわかった気にならず、実際に体験（体感）してほしい作品だと、最後に言っておく。
ひとこと補足。この作品の世界に、すぐ入っていけた（ように思えた）理由のひとつは、ノンバーバルだということ。言葉がいらない、言葉による説明がまったくなくても楽しめる作品だ。
