大きな地震のあと、部屋の中のあらゆる物が倒れ、足の踏み場もなかったため、マンション1階の集会室に泊めてもらったり、同じマンションに住んでいるのに普段あまり話をしなかったおじいさんやおばあさん、若い男性と会話をしたり、少しずつ交流が生まれている。
地震があったとき、僕は（世田谷区の）桜新町で打ち合わせをしていたのだけど、電車が止まったので、江東区の自宅まで5時間ほど歩いて帰ってきた。昨夏まで住んでいた下北沢なら、そんなに遠くないのになぁ、などと思いながら。
ひとりで５時間ウォーキングはきつかったけど（革靴だったし）、日本橋のあたりでたまたま話をした男性は、「葛西まで帰るんです。家族も待っているし」と語り、「水、ありますか、飲んだほうがいいですよ。１本余ってますからどうぞ」と、「なんとか保存水」とかいうペットボトルをくれた。初対面の僕にそんなことをしてくれるなんて思ってもみなかったので、むちゃくちゃうれしかった。
他にも、渋谷駅から吉祥寺までの徒歩ルートを聞いてきた高齢の女性、東久留米から来て、新宿をめざして歩いている男性、日比谷公園で出会った東向島まで帰るという親子（若い女性とお母さん）、実家が桜新町で日本橋に住んでいるという若い男性などと言葉を交わし、人と話すことでかなりホッとした。
日比谷では、スルガ銀行のATMコーナーだったと思うけど、何人もの人の姿が見えたので中に入ってみると、ATMの機械の前にブルーシートが何枚も敷かれ、何十人もの人が座ったり、横になったりしていた。外は寒かったし、暖かいATMコーナーを解放し、おそらくブルーシートを提供したのだろうし、スルガ銀行の粋な計らいだと感心した。
巨大地震は極めてつらい状況を生んでいるけれど、人と人とのリアルなつながりも生み出しているのだと思う。ツイッターもフェイスブックもいいけれど、やはりリアルなつながりでしか得られない温もりもあると、あらためて確信した。
