北海道は雪が嫌い？

　１泊２日の北海道出張から帰宅。函館と札幌に立ち寄ったが、函館から特急の北斗で札幌へ移動する間、隣に座られた女性とお話した。
　その方の長男は、Ｈ大学の理系の学部を卒業し、自動車メーカーで水素燃料の研究開発をしており、次男・三男は双子のでやはりすでに社会人となっているという。今回は、その女性の実家近くでのお墓参りを兼ねて、転勤した三男のところへ様子を見に行ってきたそうだ。お子さん思いの素晴らしいお母さん。
　
　途中から乗ってこられたその女性とちょこちょこおしゃべりしていたのだが（僕がおしゃべりなので）、印象に残ったのは「雪はイヤですよ〜」というひとこと。

　ひさしぶりに聞いたけど、北海道の人は雪を好まない人が多い。理由はシンプル。雪かきが重労働だからである。妻の実家がある広尾町の人たちは、雪かきを日々行うのは骨が折れると、たしかにこぼしていた。実際、僕も体験したことはあるけれど、べたべたした雪ではないとはいえ、半端な積雪量ではないから重く、まわり一面雪景色だと、どれだけやっても雪かきは終わらないという気になる。
　それにがんばって雪かきしても、一晩たてば元通りになったり、数時間で雪かき前の状態を再現してくれるくらい降ることもある。

　こっちから行った人間からすると、冬なのに雪の少ない北海道は物足りない感じもするのだが、地元に住む人たちにとっては事情は違ってくる。このように、観光客視点と生活視点は180度異なる場合もある。観光ビジネス視点に立つと、また違ってくるかもしれない。雪国では、積雪がビジネスにつながる業種もあるわけだから。

　ところ変われば、物の見方も、価値観も変わってくるというわけだ。ものごとはさまざまな角度から見る必要がある、と教えていただいた気がする。
