小熊英二さんが『1968』を書いた理由
『文學界』(2010年5月号)の小熊英二さんと高橋源一郎さんの対談を読む。
上下巻あわせて二千ページものボリュームがある『1968』について、「社会科学の本の中には中立性を保つために、特に読んでもらう層のことを考えないようなものも多いのですが、この本は強いメッセージと同時に、読まれるべき相手を想定して書かれたんじゃないのかなという気がしたんですが、いかがでしょう。」という高橋さんの質問に対し、「いちばんの対象は現在の二十歳くらいの人たちに読んでもらいたいと思っていました。」と小熊さん。この返答を見て、中学生以上のすべての人に向けた「よりみちパン！セ」シリーズ（理論社）で、小熊さんが『日本という国』を書いている理由が少しわかった気がする。
また、高橋さんの「そもそも、小熊さんが、一九六八年という時代を選んで、かくも厚い本を書こうと思われた最大の理由は何でしょう。」という問いに対して、小熊さんはこう語っている。
「やっぱりいちばんよく知らない時代だから、でしょうね。もちろん当時若者だった年代の当事者の方々にとってはよく知っている時代なんだと思いますけれども、若い年代にとってみれば近過去ほどよく知らない。教科書でも、歴史の授業でも教わることがない。しかし、にもかかわらず二〇一〇年の現在に何か強い影響を及ぼしている。尾を引いている時代のことであるということで、やはり知っておかないと前に進めないだろうと思って、書きました。
もう一つは、調べていて思ったのは、彼ら、現在の二十歳ぐらいが直面している「現代的不幸」といいますか、戦争とか飢餓とか貧困とかの「近代的不幸」とは違うような、心の虚しさとか、生きている実感の喪失とか、リストカットや摂食障害という形で顕在化するような問題のルーツみたいなものが実はこの時代にあるということなんですよね。そういう観点から、一九六八年を書いたわけです。（後略）」
もちろん、対談そのものはこんなに短いわけでなく、もっと長く、全文を引用するわけにもいかないで、気になる方は『文學界』を手にとって読んでいただきたい。
高橋さんには二度お目にかかり、一昨日初めて言葉をかわし（といっても、挨拶程度）、小熊さんとも何度か軽く話したことがある。だからどう、というわけでもないのだが、小熊さんが二十歳ぐらいの若い人のことをそこまで考えていることに驚いた（失礼！）とともに感心した。よりみちパン！セシリーズで『日本という国』を書かれたのも、きっと若い人に読んでもらいたいという気持ちが強かったからではないだろうか。
小熊さんはフェアネスを重んじる人ではないかと思うので、『日本という国』を著されたのもその流れかもしれない。ちなみにフェアネスは、日本語に置き換えるなら「公平」「公正」が近いのではないだろうか。日本という国について知ってもらうことが、知らせることがフェアネスにつながるのではないかと。
