I spent some time reviewing replays and vods from IEM of the standard ZvT games while making notes to get a better understanding of the way the best pro players are playing the ZvT match up right now including build orders, scouting tendencies and unit positioning as well as general game flow.
Throughout these timings, you want to be droning hard, spreading creep not getting supply blocked and scouting your opponent to know if you need to make units instead of drones. If your opponent is passive and only putting on pressure that 4 queens (3 defensive/creep queens + the injecting queen at whichever base they are attacking), 12 speedlings (maybe a few banes) and an overseer can handle then the goal is to hit all of the above timings and have a high drone count (dark has 66 by 6 minutes).
At this point in time, you should have 5 gases and 3 bases fully saturated, 3 injecting queens, 3 creep/defense queens, a fourth base, macro hatch and hydra den in production as well as a lair, a baneling nest, baneling speed and +1/+1 on the way. If you are missing any of these things, get whatever you need before proceeding to the next step.
Since you should have a fairly strong economy at this time (3 base 5 gas saturation) and making more drones is not a high priority (due to your fourth base not being finished yet so additional drones would have reduced mining efficiency anyways) now is the time to make units. Use primarily Zerglings and Banelings (banelings with baneling speed are incredibly powerful), but remember to use your defensive queens in the fight as well.
Note: If the Terran is still applying a ton of pressure, continue to make units. You need to survive here and if the Terran is still able to apply pressure then you need to be able to stop it, thus keep making units until you are able to push back the Terran. A few things could have happened that caused this to be the case, notably:
As the game progresses, you also want to keep expanding whenever possible and can make additional extractors as needed. Also remember to make spore/spine crawlers whenever needed in all stages of the game and you can also make more queens for injecting new bases/spreading creep or for transfuse in the late-game. Additionally, pneumatized carapace (overlord speed) as well as burrow are good tech upgrades that you should get eventually once you have a strong income and can easily afford them.
This build sets zerg up for a primarily zergling baneling based army composition. In the early-mid game you want to defend with zerglings, banelings and queens. Then in the mid-late game you want to add on some hydralisks as needed (usually 15-20). Once hive tech is reached, stop hydralisk production and focus on making zerglings, banelings, ultralisks, corruptors (as needed), vipers (as needed) and queens (as needed). The corruptors are meant to take out medivacs (especially drops) as well as terran liberators, and you will likely not need more than 15-20 similar to the hydralisks. The vipers are powerful caster units and are good during engagements with blinding cloud and at picking a part the terran army with abduct as well as dealing AOE damage to air units with parasitic bomb. Generally speaking, 3-4 vipers is a good number however it is highly dependent on your opponents unit composition, your ability to control vipers and the current state of your economy. If the game goes for a long time, or if your Terran opponent has an army composed of many siege tanks you can also consider an attempt to transition to a broodlord based army.
Note: This army composition is primarily designed to defeat bio based armies and the build is designed to also stop hellion/hellbat + Banshee/liberator/raven attacks. However you will likely need a different composition if your opponent is playing something like mech or sky terran. (In those cases, focus more heavily on the hydralisk production, rather than focusing on ling bane. Vipers and broodlords/corruptors are also more important)
20th Drone: The 20th drone you create should be placed behind a vespene geyser at the third base you plan to take. This is to hide to safely take your third base. If it is found by the enemy reaper make an extractor on the vespene geyser so that it can not be killed by the reaper and send a queen and your zerglings to get rid of the reaper so you can safely take your third.
First 2 Queens: Your first two queens should inject their respective hatcheries and then proceed to your natural base. The second set of energy should be used on an inject at your natural as well as a creep tumour at your natural and your third queen should be made in your main base to begin injecting.
First 12 zerglings: These are important for defending early game hellion attacks (usually 4-6 hellions and reaper). Place them behind your defensive queens, spread out and ready to surround hellions if they attempt to dive on a high value target (such as your natural mineral line).
The Zombie Hydra appears as a skeletal dragon with multiple heads; two and three are the most common, but it sometimes appears with as many as four or as few as one. As with most multi-part enemies, each head counts as a separate foe (like the Pyrohydra), but the lore treats them as the appendages of a single being. Each head has two large horns on the back of its skull, huge jaws full of sharp teeth, a long neck dotted with large spines, and numerous smaller spines on its skull. Certain attacks reveal that it also has a large tail that ends in a massive bone spike, yet it has no visible body in combat, and the overworld sprite in EBF3 looks like some sort of serpentine creature.
In EBF4, the Zombie Hydra has been completely redrawn; more notable changes include being white instead of off-white and the horns being merged with the skull into a single structure. Its heads can now be severed from their necks, leaving them floating in the air as an orb of red light appears in the skull cavity.
Despite appearing completely skeletal, the Zombie Hydra/Dragon is implied to still have some flesh on its body in EBF3; its Bestiary entry calls it a “Rotting Hydra”, and it can drop Dragon Scales when defeated. Later games eschew this notion by having the monster drop nothing but bone and darkness-themed Materials, implying that it is nothing but skeletal remains animated by dark magic or some other evil power.
In all appearances, the Zombie Hydra mainly favors powerful physical attacks and Dark magic; it also has some Bio and Fire options, depending on the game. Its signature ability allows it to revive its heads when their HP is depleted – only by slaying all of its heads at once (or in quick succession) can this be averted. Every head has identical stats and abilities, besides any changes (such as via debuffs) that happen during the battle.
The Zombie Hydra resists Dark, Poison, and all status effects and debuffs; it’s also completely impossible to Poison. However, its weaknesses to Holy and especially Fire can be easily exploited by both Matt and Natalie.
Zombie Dragons only appear in the game’s final area, The Rift. There are two battles involving them; a single headed specimen, and a classic two-headed specimen. They are essentially downgraded versions of the Zombie Hydra that appears in Epic Battle Fantasy 2, lacking some of its strongest attacks (like Syphon) and its ability to revive others of their kind. However, they are still very powerful foes, boasting strong non-elemental attacks. Fortunately, all Zombie Hydra battles are optional, and there is no reason to actually fight them unless the party hasn’t reached the level cap yet or the player desperately needs Solid Spikes and Dragon Scales for some reason.
The Zombie Dragon’s resistances are straightforward; it absorbs Poison and Dark, is immune to Doom and Instant Death, and greatly resists Stun and Syphon. On the other hand, it is weak to Fire and especially Holy. It also has high HP backed by above-average Evade.
The Zombie Hydra is located in the western tomb of Graybone Cemetery, surrounded by red clouds that can only be crossed with the Winged Boots. Unlike most optional bosses, there is no reward for killing it apart from the enormous amounts of experience and ability points accumulated from its reviving heads (while said to be revived, each new head increased the reward pool as if it was another enemy), and as such can be fought as an experience farm.
Unlike many returning bosses, the Zombie Hydra has undergone significant changes in appearance and abilities. It has three heads instead of two (likely to compensate for the increased player headcount), can cast Fire spells in addition to Dark magic, and now has twice as many Instant Death abilities. Each head can also deal enormous physical damage, being capable of killing one of the players at full health if caught off guard. Its offensive stats are very high, allowing it to deal a lot of damage per turn. Additionally, if a head suffers a powerful attack (over 16% of its maximum HP in a single blow), it will detach from its spinal cord, permanently increasing its Evade by 50%.
Much like its EBF2 counterpart, the Zombie Hydra is able to regenerate its fallen heads again, with the specific condition of each head “charging” its revival skill on its next turn after a head has been destroyed. This means that the party has to kill all of its heads within two turns to prevent them from reviving each other.
A four-headed Zombie Hydra appears as the final opponent of Battle Mountain’s Miniboss Marathon. However, it suffers from a coding error that prevents the first head to be destroyed from being revived; the other heads will revive each other normally.
Holy and Fire attacks are the best options against the Zombie Hydra, being literally twice as powerful as normal; on the other hand, it strongly absorbs Dark and Bio damage. It’s also immune to Freeze and very resistant to Syphon, Stun, Doom, and Instant Death.
