The Kawai K4 was my first synth, and that’s why it has a special place in my heart and in my studio. Actually my K4 (pictured below) is not the one I originally bought and sold, but is instead a cheap find on eBay, nearly 15 years after the first one, and almost 15 years ago as of this writing. (Time flies!)
The total set of sounds available for the K4 have always been a bit of a mystery to me. Back in the day there used to be special Kawai data cards with sounds on them, but already in 1992, before the World Wide Web, the patches started to circulate on the Internet on mailing lists and FTP sites. I too ended up with copies of banks that may or may not have been the original factory patches, or from some data cards. I’ve never been entirely sure which was which.
Since the factory patches for the Kawai K4 are still available for download from Kawai UK (Standard MIDI File format) and Kawai USA (MIDI System Exclusive format), I decided to have a look at them and see if I could create some sort of reference, in the hope that would be useful for fellow K4 users.
Over the years there have been many utility programs to manipulate or at least list the patches in the sound banks, but they can be tricky to run these days, unless you know your way around DOSBox or even an Atari ST emulator. That is why I have been slowly writing a modern utility called k4tool to help me manage K4 patches. I don’t know how it will evolve, but for the purposes of this article I managed to persuade it to give me a HTML listing of the patches in a bank.
For example, here are the contents of the K4INT.SYX sound bank, which is one of the nine factory sound banks downloaded from Kawai UK, and probably the original internal sound bank. Looking across the rows you can see that similar sounds have been placed at the same index in different banks: for example, A-4, B-4, C-4 and D-4 are all synth sounds.
Polyphony is low on the K4 at 16, so I noticed the best results are obviously in single mode. In multimode you can get dropouts if you pile on the layers. Having the Kawai K4r also, I can double the polyphony by linking the two together which is pretty cool. The sounds could even be fattened up more as well.
A couple of software applications that have been working well for me with the Kawai K4 are (1) Steem Atari Kawai K4 Robot Editor and (2) Kawai K4 Editor for Windows. I am also currently testing (3) Kawai K4 Editor for Atari using Steem on Windows 7. Below are some screenshots of both applications that I have hooked up to the Kawai K4 Synthesizer. The Kawai K4 Robot Editor that mixes and creates new sounds works very well.
Just picked up some new Kawai K4 Sounds from Ebay called the Kawai K4 Synth Patches 7 bank set from Greytsounds. They were delivered via email despite the photo having floppies on it. A while back, floppies were often used to send data through the mail. Nowadays you can get the sysex data via email which is nice.
Today I checked out some of the Kawai K4/K4r patches from Greytsounds and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. These patches are much better than most of the others off the Internet that I have tried. I highly recommend them. I feel the Greytsounds Kawai K4 patches make better use of the effects and layers. They really sound professional. Note that I am not affiliated in any way with Greytsounds.
I think the only change with the ROM upgrade is the reduction of static and clicks with the sound. I noticed this a little but, but found the noise could be reduced with some fine editing. The update also helps to speed up the OS and lower distortions in double mode patches. The K4 and K4r ROMs remove a lot, if not all the lag when playing many notes simultaneously as well.
Hi, What ended up working was turning off program change on the k4r. Now It works great! My K4r is version 1.1 and I do get that clicking attack sound. I may upgrade, not sure. Wish I had room in my studio for the keyboard version to hear the difference. -Frank
Hello Ajay! Great news on picking up a Kawai K4 Synthesizer. Although Rack Modules can take up less space and sometimes have more features, I really like having the keys version of the K4. Looks like you a found a nice gem.
On the K4, and I assume on the K1 too, once you choose a waveform and press a note, and then you change the waveform, the running note will keep the chosen waveform until the note Off. This can be used musically as well.

The ring mod is incorrectly depicted in the manual diagram. S1 does mod S2, but the ring mod output comes out of the S1 output. S2 output remains as the unaltered S2 sound. The unaltered sound of S1 is muted.S1 level controls ring mod output level and S2 level controls unaltered S2 output. You can then blend the two to taste.
I have tested, and the E1 source mute button do control the source mute status on the K4r. Setting the source level to 0 changes the mute status on the K4r. You have move to another parameter page on the K4r screen before the source mute status indicator (CCCC) will update to something like C-CC.
Rumble K II Builder is a digital wavetable synthesizer and is an emulation of an additive wavetable Kawai K1 digital synthesizer from 1985. This Rack Extension mimics the operation system and the naming conventions on a Kawai.
This version of the Rumble K series comes with Sine, Saw and Square oscillators, a Shaper, an Amp Envelope section with DAHDSR controls, Vibrato or LFO, Auto Bend and Aftertouch, Pitch Wheel, Low Pass Filter and Frequency panels, 7 effects devices and 7 modulation matrixes with in total 13 slots.
This device is for everyone who wants to:- Have a collection of the original instrument patches of the Kawai K1.- Transfer sounds from the Kawai K1 and build patches for use in Reason.- Have a lofi 8 bit character synthesizer as an addition and counterpart of synthesizers with very clean oscillators.- Make lofi sounds or instruments for use in genres like hip hop, but also wants to use emulations of classic sounds like the Roland TB 303 bass synthesizer, the raving Roland Alpha Juno Hoover instrument and the Roland JP 8000 trance Super Saw sound.
Rumble K II Builder uses additive wavetable synthesis to generate sounds. The additive synthesis is based on a Wave oscillator using waveforms, just one of the in total 4 oscillators that can be introduced in the sound at various times, levels and durations. The sonic results of additive synthesis can vary dramatically; from standard analog type of synthesizer sounds, via emulations of existing instruments, to extremely complex and animated timbres. The other 3 oscillators are Sine, Saw and Square wave based oscillators and are mixed with the Wave oscillator. The Sine Oscillator features Amplitude Modulation (AM) and modulates the Wave oscillator.
The Kawai K3 and K3m (module) is a fantastic hybrid synth from the mid 80s. It has digitally stored waveforms and analog filters. It’s in the ballpark of the Korg DW-8000, Prophet VS, PPG and the Ensoniq ESQ. The K3/K3m has the most firm and solid low end of any synth that came out of the 80s and it’s a secret weapon that deserves more recognition.
These patches are in a sysex format and I’ve included both the individual sysex files as well as the complete sysex bank.I refer to the Kawai K3 manual for how to upload these files into your K3/K3m.Just to be clear, these patches will NOT work for any other Kawai synth like the K1, K4 or K5000. These are totally different synths.
From an engineering as well as a subjective player’s point of view, the MP9500 has one of the finest actions available on any piano with a simulated action, at any price, and it felt like a noticeable improvement over that of the MP9000. Initially, the extra weight makes you wonder if the action is a little sluggish, but as with real pianos that feature a heavy action, you soon realise (after playing a little) that the extra weight actually gives you the control needed for serious playing. And the feeling of control is what can separate a bad piano from a good one, regardless of tone.
After a brief period of time to familiarise myself with the instrument, I was soon flying about the keyboard tackling Czerny and Liszt, and part playing, as with the best pianos, is something that just happened without having to think very much about it. There are settings to adjust the velocity-response curve, although I found the normal setting, which is the closest approximation to the Concert Grand EX’s response, to be perfect for me. Although the feeling of the weighted key pressing down makes a huge difference, the MP9500 also gives you just the right ‘response’ when a key is released; it bounces back in just the way you’d expect a key on a grand piano to do. This allows very satisfying staccato playing, and also makes it easy to play quick repetitions of the same note with alternating fingers.
I also played the Kawai a lot with the many computer-based piano sample libraries available. Playing Steinberg and Wizoo’s The Grand VST Instrument was a joy, and this was perhaps a perfect match, although other libraries, such as Post Musical Instrument’s Grandioso Steinway Model D for Gigastudio, were equally rewarding. While a Kawai has a totally different action to a Steinway, for example, the combination of a superb action with a meticulously sampled piano was unparalleled. However, this is by no means a criticism of the built-in sound, since the difference between the Megabytes available to the MP9500 for storing sounds and the Gigabytes available to a computer are obviously going to yield different results. https://sites.google.com/view/wolfpugpersre
