昨日、隅田川べりで花火をしていたとき、犬を連れて通りがかったおじさんといろいろな話をした。その中で、東京大空襲の話も聞いた。その方のお母さんは、木更津に住んでいたころ、東京大空襲を目撃したとのこと。お母さんが当時まだ幼かったのか、「東京の空がきれいだった」と記憶しているそうだ。強風で、木更津にはお札が降ってきた、ともお母さんはおっしゃっているという。
空が真っ赤に燃え、10万人ともいわれる人々が一夜にして亡くなった東京大空襲。歴史的な悲劇でさえ、一人の女の子の目には、東京湾ごしにそのように映ったようだ。その女の子が目撃したのは、もっとも被害が大きかったとされる、1945年3月10日の東京大空襲のことだったかどうか、そこまでは確認できなかったが、東京大空襲の生の感想というのはあまり聞いたことがなかったし、息子さん経由の話とはいえ、僕にとって貴重な経験だった。
終戦記念日か近づいているからか、東京大空襲の爆撃を最初に受けたのがここ深川地区だからか、自分が歳をとったからか、なぜだかわからないけれど、このところ戦争や空襲のことが気になってしまう。僕は戦争反対派だし、戦争はあってはならないものだと確信しているけれど、「戦争は良くない、悲惨なものである」ことをときどき、みんなが意識したほうがいいとも思う。戦争をしないために、戦争を忘れないこと。いつもいつも真面目とはいえない僕が、そんなことを考えてしまう、平成23年の夏。
